Raw materials for wheat germ oil
PROJECTS

The wheat for the NATURATA wheat germ oil is grown using conventional methods as there is currently not enough wheat germ which comes from organically controlled conditions for the manufacture of oil.

The reasons for this are complex:
You only get wheat germ in the processing of white flour and only a very small amount of this flour is made in organic quality. The small amount of organic wheat germ gained here is consumed directly and there is, by far, not enough for oil manufacture. To press 1 litre wheat germ oil you would require 1,600 kg wheat which is processed to white flour. Where does this surprisingly high figure come from? Firstly, the wheat germ only makes up ca. 2-3 % of the wheat corn and, secondly, the fat content of wheat germ is ca. 10% which is very low compared to other oil seeds. Using gentle pressing methods without the addition of heat and without refining, the yield is only ca. 30%. Furthermore, to make things even more difficult, wheat germ can only be stored for a short period as it quickly goes bad. It is, therefore, not possible to accumulate supplies in order to get a sufficient amount for oil manufacture.

The NATURATA wheat germ oil is made in a small, family-run business in the Sauerland which specialises in wheat germ and products made from this.
