Camelina oil from Germany
PROJECTS

The Vellenga family from the Michael estate in Endeholz, in North Germany, together with the Dittmann family and other Demeter estates in South Germany, supply camelina for the NATURATA Demeter camelina oil.

The Michael estate has been meeting the strict criteria of biodynamic farming since 1992. The farm has ca. 80 hectares land which is used to grow a wide range of crops. In addition to this the Vellenga family also owns 25 ha. of grassland and 150 ha. forest and their farmyard includes ewes, mother cows with calves, pigs and hens.

Kees Vellenga discovered the ecological benefits of camelina many years ago and has, since then, been gaining experience with regards to using camelina as a catch crop and for which crops this is suitable. Since a buyer has been found in NATURATA and more and more people are discovering this oil for themselves, Kees is also trying to persuade other Demeter farmers to grow camelina.
